Is digital marketing a new fancy buzzword?

As I stated on the home page of the website: not at all.
All efforts you make to connect with clients through electronic technology, including social media, ads, email, blog, video and other digital content, will help you gain and retain clients.
Let’s showcase that with a few numbers that speak louder than words.

BUT

First of all, what is Digital Marketing?
To answer this question, and also to find numbers and statistics, I made some research with our friend Google and his ‘teammHate’ Bing.

Three definitions to help you find your way:

Definition 1
“Digital marketing is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium.”
Source: Wikipedia.org

Definition 2
“At a high level, digital marketing refers to advertising delivered through digital channels such as search engines, websites, social media, email, and mobile apps. While this term covers a wide range of marketing activities, all are not universally agreed upon.”
Source: Marketo

I prefer the last one, from the FINANCIAL TIMES:

Definition 3
“The marketing of products or services using digital channels to reach consumers. The key objective is to promote brands through various forms of digital media.

Digital marketing extends beyond internet marketing to include channels that do not require the use of the internet. It includes mobile phones (both SMS and MMS), social media marketing, display advertising, search engine marketing, and any other form of digital media.

Most experts believe that ‘digital’ is not just yet another channel for marketing. It requires a new approach to marketing and a new understanding of customer behavior. For example, it requires companies to analyse and quantify the value of downloads of apps on mobile devices, tweets on Twitter, likes on Facebook and so on.”

Secondly, why do you need Digital Marketing for your business?

If you are running a business or plan to do so, your customers should be the core focus of your whole strategy. However, it’s not easy to know more about them, unless you develop a long run and costly plan to reach them.
Well, this belongs to the past before Google (and maybe Bing) got stronger than your mom.

Nowadays, people use digital devices to find good opportunities on the Internet (information on products and services, purchase online, learn new skills…), instead of visiting physical shops or companies. Doing so, posting on social media and visiting websites, they give a lot of information about their needs, interests, habits, and profiles all day long. Working with all these data, digital marketing campaigns are becoming more prevalent and efficient by reaching your specific targeted audience, almost all over the world.

Thanks to Google Search and Bing!

Digital communication in general and digital marketing – my main focus for this article – are one of the most popular key words on search engines.
To illustrate that, let’s have a look at searches from Google and Bing for the term “Digital Marketing”, worldwide, in the United States and in Switzerland.
Let’s have a look at numbers.

Digital marketing and digital communication (search term on February 1st 2019)

Digital marketing (number of results) Worldwide United States Switzerland
Google Search 2.620.000.000 1.720.000.000 5.440.000
Bing Search 42.700.000 3.410.000 199.000

Digital communication (number of results) Worldwide United States Switzerland
Google Search 1.760.000.000 838.000.000 3.250.000
Bing Search 16.400.000 1.960.000 489.000

Thirdly, what are these numbers telling us?
As you can see, the search term “Digital Marketing”:

  1. Demonstrates that Google Search provided more results than Bing. Thus, we will use the result from our friend Google for the rest of the article.
  2. The search term “Digital Marketing” shows by far the highest number of results compared to the term “Digital Communication”.
For example in Switzerland, we have 5.440.000 vs 3.250.000 results.
  3. People are in fact interested in Digital marketing even in Switzerland (about 3.250.000 results).

Indeed, “what is digital marketing” is the second keyword on the list of top keywords for Marketing, behind “how the market works”.
